Seagull’s Luck:

A climbing competition

Skill. Chaos. Questionable judgment.

Boulder Union is about to unleash Seagull’s Luck—a climbing comp with just the right mix of skill, chaos, and questionable judgment. Expect boulders that surprise you, prizes that might make you laugh, and rules that… well, we’re still figuring those out. We can’t guarantee free drinks—unless you count the water fountain—but we can promise one hell of a good time.

    4. Attempts: Every time your feet leave the ground counts.

Categories

RECOMMENDED categories that competitors can compete in:

  • Beginner (V0-V2)

  • Intermediate (V3-V5)

  • Advanced (V6-V8)

  • Open (V8+)

ELIGIBILITY

  • In order to compete, you must be registered. You can register in advanced either online or at the front desk or Day of.

  • You must create an account and sign our safety waiver prior to any climbing.

  • Compete in your wave (Open/Advanced 9am-12pm, Intermediate/Beginner 12:30-3:30pm).

  • Only climbers registered in the Open category can qualify for Finals.

  • Climbers in all categories are eligible for prizes!

Rules

We keep it fair, fun, and a little chaotic — but there are still rules. Read up so you know how to play.

Citizens & Open Qualifiers Format

  • About 40 boulder problems, each ranked roughly from easiest to hardest. Boulders are worth more points the harder they get!

  • Climb any problems you want, as many times as you want, but only get points for the first time you send.

  • You’ve got 3 hours to top the hardest 5 climbs you can.

  • Only your top 5 completed problems count toward your final score.

  • Climbs are set monochromatically (e.g. a climb will have all blue holds or all yellow holds)

  • Wood volumes are “on” for all climbs

Scoring

  • To claim a top, you need two witness initials on your scorecard.

  • Every attempt starts from the marked “Start” holds, demarcated by arrows — no skipping holds to work individual moves.

  • A climb is complete when you control the finish hold with both hands.

  • Every attempt counts

    • Flash = 1 attempt.

    • Attempts are used to break ties, so be sure to log them all!

  • Rankings are based on the highest total score of five climbs.

  • We reserve the right to bump competitors to another category based on performance.

  • Unreadable, incomplete scorecards = no score.

  • Competitors only earn points for boulders they finish. Attempts do not earn points, but every attempt must be recorded on the scorecard because attempts are used to break ties.

Courtesy

  • Be cool. If you fall, let the next person in line take a turn before trying again.

Boulder Union Seagull’s Luck Policies

  • Sign up online or at the front desk — do it soon before spots fly away (or get snatched by a seagull).

  • We’re running both a Citizens Comp (open to climbers of all abilities) and an Open Comp (for those after a little more chaos and the chance at finals glory). Only Open competitors qualify for Onsight Finals.

  • Registration costs between $45.00 and $75.00, depending on whether you’re a Boulder Union member or non-member, and if you’d like to add a comp t-shirt. Registration is available online until we hit capacity or the day before the competition—whichever comes first.

  • When registering, please select the category that best fits your current climbing level:

    • Beginner (V0–V2)

    • Intermediate (V3–V5)

    • Advanced (V6–V8)

    • Open (V8+)

We reserve the right to bump competitors to another category based on performance to keep things fair.

  • Absolutely! Grab something to drink, add your cheer to the chaos, and enjoy the show — for free.

  • We'll notify finalists via email and announce winners during the awards later that night. Results will also stay posted in the gym and sent out afterward.

  • Totally. Climbers from all categories are eligible for prizes—and we guarantee there'll be something funny, useful, or legendary for everyone.
